Enguri HPP will stop working for 4 months

The largest hydroelectric power station in Georgia will suspend its operation at the beginning of 2021. This was announced by the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava, they reported Georgia news.

All five power units will stop operating in February 2021 for up to four months to work on a hydraulic tunnel, which is located in the Abkhaz region of Georgia. The renovation of the hydroelectric power station is being sponsored by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Shutting down the units of the Enguri HPP will not harm Georgia’s energy system. Abkhazia will also be disconnected from this electricity, and during this period it will receive imported electricity from the Russian Federation, for which it will pay on its own.

What is Enguri hydroelectric power station?

Enguri hydroelectric power station – this is the most large hydroelectric power station of the Caucasus. The height of the dam is 271.5 meters, and its length – 728 meters. The electrical nominal design capacity of the Enguri HPP is 1300 MW, but at the moment when planned work is about to be carried out, the power of the HPP is only 500 MW.

Due to certain technical problems that arose during construction, the Inguri hydroelectric power station was never brought to its rated capacity.
