The Russian Federation wants to detonate a nuclear bomb in space. On February 9, 2024, the Russian Federation launched a launch vehicle into space “Soyuz-2-1V” с секретной полезной нагрузкой для Министерства Обороны РФ.

Soyuz-2-1V” with a secret payload for the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Russia had the idea to use nuclear weapons in space. This strategy is not intended to point nuclear warheads at Earth, but is most likely used to potentially destroy communications satellites, both military and civilian.

Read also: Trump encourages Russia to attack NATO countries

Putin realizes that in a war under modern technological conditions he will not be able to win. He has no technological advantage and will not be able to upgrade his army with old tanks. Therefore, detonating a nuclear bomb in space could provide an advantage on the battlefield in an increasingly likely World War III.

Putin will reverse progress around the world

Putin decided that he could reverse progress throughout the world, and thus win the conflict with NATO. It could attempt to disrupt drone movements across the seas, disrupt commercial air travel, and throw ships off course as global maritime navigation relies on GPS.

Weapon systems such as М982 Excalibur or missiles for HIMARS rocket launchers cannot function without GPS. The same goes for Storm Shadow/SCALP, TAURUS.

Consequences if a nuclear bomb is detonated in space orbiting the Earth

Consequences: The use of nuclear weapons in Earth's orbit could have catastrophic results for space infrastructure and all of humanity.

Read also: NATO is preparing for Russian missile attacks in Europe

Here is a list of the consequences of a nuclear bomb exploding in space in Earth's orbit:

Destruction of satellites: Nuclear explosions could destroy existing artificial satellites such as Starlink, GPS, which play a critical role in modern communications, navigation, meteorology, scientific research and NATO defense.

Space debris generation: Explosions of nuclear weapons generate huge amounts of space debris, as fragments are broken into many small pieces. This debris poses a serious threat to existing and future space missions and satellites.

Radiation consequences: If a nuclear bomb were detonated in space, it could release radiation, posing a danger to spacecraft and astronauts. The radiation can also affect space stations and other objects in space.

Damage to space infrastructure: Nuclear explosions can damage spacecraft, communications and navigation satellites, disrupting telecommunications, navigation and other critical systems we rely on in everyday life.

Overall, if a nuclear bomb were detonated in space, it could have far-reaching and critically destructive consequences for both space infrastructure and the modern economy, supply chain, smart technology, and life on Earth in general.

Threat to US national security from the Russian Federation

Top White House national security officials, along with influential congressional lawmakers, have attempted to calm public concerns following a warning from the House Intelligence Committee chairman about the potential threat to national security posed by the growing “foreign military potential”.

Read also: Russia blocks GPS in Europe, preparing for war with NATO

According to information obtained from ABC News sources, this topic is alarming and is considered extremely sensitive for the United States. Several members of Congress, without commenting directly on the issue, noted the seriousness of the problem, while being careful not to cause panic among the public.

Russia has an idea to use nuclear weapons in space – US intelligence

Reacting to emerging issues, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, told reporters: “We intend to work together to resolve this issue, as we resolve other extremely important issues left in the shadows”.

Member of the US House Intelligence Committee Jim Himes called a threat to US national security “serious”

Connecticut Democrat and House Intelligence Committee ranking member Jim Himes made a similar point in a statement. He called the warning “serious”, however, stressed that there is no reason to panic.

“Discussion about the possibility of disclosing additional information in this matter may take place, but is not in the public domain”, – Himes noted.

In the hall of the US Senate, on the solemn February 13, a decision was made to approve a bill on foreign assistance in the total amount of 95.3 billion dollars. This significant document distributed funds among several countries, including Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

US aid package for Ukraine includes $60 billion

The massive US defense aid package for Ukraine includes $60 billion, $14.1 billion for Israel, and $4.8 billion for Indo-Pacific partner countries, including Taiwan. Particular attention was paid to humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip, for which $9.2 billion was allocated.

Read also: Migration conflict between the US authorities and the state of Texas

After approval in the Senate, the bill heads to the House of Representatives, where Republicans dominate the vote. It is known that most of them spoke out against this package, especially in terms of support for Ukraine. But Speaker of the US House of Representatives – Mike Johnson will not be able not to put this law to a vote, based on the rules of the regulations.

“The House will have to find its way forward and they will get the job done, but it was important to start this process and we did it”, – Republican Senator John Thune emphasized.

Defense aid bill to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan was approved by the US Senate

It is worth noting that the defense assistance bill for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan was approved by the US Senate last week, after introducing a separate aid package for Israel. It is important to mention that the proposal also contained a bipartisan border agreement, however, Republican senators opposed it, hearing criticism from Donald Trump and Republican leaders in the House of Representatives.

Read also: Trump encourages Russia to attack NATO countries

Thus, the US Senate took a significant step by approving a bill of defense assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, which, however, did not affect aspects of US border policy, an agreement on which was never adopted.

Donald Trump has said that he encourages Russia to attack any NATO country that he believes has failed to fulfill its financial obligations to the NATO alliance.

Joe Biden's White House immediately condemned Trump's comments, saying in a statement: “Encouraging murderous regimes to attack our closest allies is horrific and inappropriate, and it threatens the national security of the United States, global stability, and our economy at home.”.

Trump's comments must be music to the ears of Russian dictator Putin

Trump's remarks encouraging Russia to attack any NATO country also sparked outrage in other political circles on Saturday. Conservative political commentator Alyssa Farah Griffin said Trump's comments should have been “music” to the ears of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

On the other hand, Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio on Sunday sought to downplay Trump's remarks, which came two days after former Fox News host and Trump supporter Tucker Carlson conducted a lengthy, largely free interview with Vladimir Putin.

Read also: NATO is preparing for Russian missile attacks in Europe

“Trump talked about an event that happened in the past when he was president”, – Rubio said in an interview with CNN. “He didn't take us out of NATO, and American troops are stationed all over Europe, then as today.”.

“Donald Trump tells the story”, – Rubio continued. “He is not a member of the External Relations Council. He doesn't talk like a traditional politician, and you'd think people would have figured that out by now. He said NATO was broke or broke until he took over because people weren't paying their dues and he used leverage to get them to step up”.

Trump expressed doubts about the existence of NATO

Trump has expressed doubts about the existence of NATO and about helping Ukraine defend itself from invasion starting in 2022, an international alliance that the United States has pledged to defend if necessary.

His remarks on Saturday coincided with US senators debating a bill to provide $60 billion to Ukraine, $14 billion in military aid to Israel, $9 billion in humanitarian aid to citizens in Gaza, the West Bank, and $4.8 billion to support allies in the Indo-Pacific region .

But the bill has faced opposition from some Republicans who want to see the foreign aid package tied to security measures along the U.S.-Mexico border, which is emerging as a defining issue in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Some of these same lawmakers hope to propose amendments to stem the flow of migrants into the United States, while others want to eliminate humanitarian aid provisions and limit foreign aid to arms and materiel.

If the bill passes the Senate on Sunday, it will move to the House, where Republicans have a slim majority. The House has already rejected the Israeli aid bill. House Chairman Mike Johnson stressed that he could split the aid into separate bills.

Read also: Neuralink implanted a chip into the human brain for the first time

“I have said very clearly that you must consider these issues on their own merits”, – Johnson said last week.

Even before Trump's comments about NATO, European capitals were reassessing their expectations of U.S. support and cooperation in the event of a second Trump presidency.

During a 70-minute speech in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Trump recalled telling an unidentified head of state at an unspecified NATO meeting when he was president that the United States would not defend countries that “non-executive”.

Mr. Trump, if we didn’t pay and Russia attacks us, will you protect us?

While some immediately questioned whether the said conversation took place, Trump continued: “One of the presidents of a large country stood up and said: “Mr. Trump, if we didn’t pay and Russia attacks us, will you protect us?”

“I said: “You haven't paid, are you in debt?” No, I won't protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever they want. You have to pay. You have to pay your bills”.

Increase defense spending to 2% of each NATO country's GDP by 2024

NATO countries agreed in 2014, following Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea, to end the spending cuts they had made since the Cold War and increase defense spending to the tune of 2% of each NATO country's GDP by 2024.

The US under Trump's leadership may abandon its NATO commitments

During his 2016 campaign, Trump alerted Western allies by warning that the United States under his leadership could abandon its NATO commitments and only defend countries that met the alliance's 2% goal.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has spurred additional military spending by many NATO countries

As of 2022, NATO reported that just seven of NATO's 31 member countries met the commitment to spend more than 3% of GDP on defense in 2014. Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine has spurred additional military spending by many NATO member countries.

Trump's remarks come as Ukraine remains war-bound and has been fending off a Russian invasion since 2022. And Republicans in Congress are becoming increasingly skeptical about providing additional aid to Ukraine.

Trump also noted the recent failure of Congress to implement immigration legislation.

On Saturday, Trump also noted the recent failure by Congress of immigration legislation aimed at addressing... migration crisis on the Texas-Mexico border. The bill was supported by current President Joe Biden, and Trump promised that if elected again, he would pass “large-scale deportation operation” on his first day in the oval office.

Trump is showing strongly in opinion polls against Biden, who defeated the former president in the 2020 election. However, he faces more than 90 criminal charges.

Read also: Russia, China and Iran are present in Irish waters

The allegations, contained in four separate indictments in different jurisdictions, allege that Trump tried to undermine the results of the election, which he lost in 2020. Trump also illegally withheld government secrets after his presidency ended and made illegal payments to an actress who claims she had a sexual encounter with Trump.

Chinese securities regulator changes leadership: last chance to cheer up the stock market. China's securities regulator has replaced its head in hopes of stemming the collapse in stocks. The surprise move, made under the watchful eye of Xi Jinping, expressed concern over the crisis gripping the market. Meanwhile, China's stock market is heading downhill.

Staff at China's top securities regulator have been working around the clock for weeks to try to support China's falling stock market, which lost more than $5 trillion. The official Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday evening announced the removal of Yi Huiman from office, the Communist Party's biggest casualty yet amid financial losses that have undermined confidence in China's economy among international investors.

Read also: China deploys long-range missiles near South Korea

The decision sent shockwaves through the China Securities Regulatory Commission, according to people familiar with the matter. Yi's departure came as a surprise even to senior officials at China's securities regulatory commission, underscoring the alarm within Xi Jinping's government about the crisis, which is now in its fourth year. Instead of Yi, Qing, a close ally of Prime Minister Li Qiang, takes over as the head of the regulator.

The China Securities Commission did not comment on the situation regarding the stock market

China experts note that these actions could be the beginning of new measures to stem the fall of the world's second largest economy. – China stock market. Restrictive measures taken last week failed to restore investor confidence.

“This step has been necessary for a long time. If one manager is not up to the task, it may be time to give another a chance. The new leader can take more decisive action rather than just words” – noted Managing Director of Zhuhai Greenbamboo Private Fund Management Jiang Liangqing.

Expectations for stronger action to stabilize China's stock market grew following Bloomberg's reports of Xi's upcoming market briefing. It is unclear what role Yi played in this.

China's latest measures, including restrictions on short selling and stock purchases by state-owned enterprises, had some impact on the market, helping it rise for three days in a row. However “National team” China bought about 70 billion yuan worth of shares over the past month, which is not enough to fully restore confidence in China's stock market, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

Government intervention could help interrupt the downward trend in the Chinese stock market

“Government intervention could help break the downtrend in China's stock market, but more systemic reforms and policy measures are needed to revalue China's stocks”, – analysts write Goldman Sachs. In the past, regulatory changes at the China Securities Regulatory Commission have caused China's stock market to rise, which may correct the market in this situation as well. But will this change the general trend? – very doubtful.

China's real estate crisis shows no signs of ending

However, major market interventions in China have rarely gone smoothly, and the country's economy faces greater challenges than during previous market downturns: China's real estate crisis shows no sign of ending, geopolitical tensions with the US continue to escalate, and foreign investors are wary of a government that suppresses private enterprise.

However, analysts note that the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) has limited ability to influence the market. She can't command “national team” or create stabilization funds and is largely dependent on other forces to stimulate economic growth.

China's stock market reflects weak growth and lack of confidence

The change of chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, although a significant event, does not fundamentally change anything, economists say. As a result, China's stock market reflects weak growth and lack of confidence. Unless Beijing addresses these fundamental issues, the stock market is likely to continue to struggle.

Now the 58-year-old new chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, Wu, faces a difficult task. He was appointed after serving as an adviser to the deputy party secretary in Shanghai and worked closely with Premier Li. Wu has extensive experience in financial regulation and is known as a man who strives for law and order.

The benchmark CSI 300 index is up more than 40% in nearly two years since 2016

The benchmark CSI 300 index has risen more than 40% in nearly two years since Liu Shiyu succeeded Xiao Gang in 2016. The rate jumped more than 80% in the two years after Liu was removed from office by Yi in 2019.

How to stabilize China's stock market?

While Wu's appointment may calm investors' nerves in the short term, addressing fundamental issues will require greater political effort to stabilize China's stock market. But it is unclear how the Chinese Communist Party will behave towards investors. This is precisely the basis of this crisis on the Chinese stock exchange.

According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, the incident took place. Mikhail Shamanov, a representative of the KGVA, noted that the elimination of the consequences of the attack continues, and information about the scale of the incident is being clarified.

In the Goloseevsky district of Kyiv, a rocket hit an 18-story residential building

He added that the missiles were launched at Kyiv from different directions. As a result of a terrorist missile attack in the Goloseevsky district of Kyiv, a missile hit an 18-story residential building, extending from the 10th to 15th floors. Emergency services are already working at the scene, evacuating residents.

The Department of Energy reported on the consequences of the attack in Ukraine. In Kyiv, as a result of the shelling, power lines were switched off and substations were de-energized. About 19.4 thousand consumers were left without electricity, including healthcare institutions. Experts intend to restore electricity within 3 hours. In Kharkov and Nikolaev, the consequences of the attack are also noticeable - more than a thousand consumers remain without electricity, but a speedy restoration is planned.

According to the latest study, hurricanes are becoming so powerful due to the climate crisis that scientists are proposing a new category 6 to classify the so-called “mega hurricanes”. In recent decades, five hurricanes would have exhibited strength consistent with this new category, with winds exceeding 309 kilometers per hour (192 mph). These “mega hurricane” are becoming more likely due to global warming caused by climate change and the burning of fossil fuels.

Climatologists propose introducing a new category 6 for classification “mega hurricanes”

Michael Wehner, scientist from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory USA, emphasized that the 192 mph wind speed is faster than most Ferraris, and proposed a new category along with another researcher, James Caussin of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They believe that being caught in such a hurricane would be extremely dangerous and destructive.

Read also: Rains in Adjara – two people died

A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences proposes an expansion of the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, created in the early 1970s. The hurricane strength scale was developed by Herbert Saffir and Robert Simpson, director of the US National Hurricane Center. On this scale, hurricanes are classified by their maximum wind speed.

Category 5 hurricanes – Katrina and Maria, no longer the most powerful

Category 5 hurricanes such as Hurricanes Katrina and Maria caused enormous damage, but a new study argues that there are even more extreme storms that require their own category. Hurricanes such as Typhoon Haiyan and Hurricane “Patricia”, made possible by climate change.

Category 6 hurricanes have not yet been observed

While Category 6 hurricanes have not yet been observed in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico or anywhere else, researchers say the conditions for them exist and stress the importance of raising awareness about climate change and its impact on major hurricanes.

The strength of hurricanes may be influenced by the El Niño effect

The strength of hurricanes can be influenced by the El Niño effect. El Niño, a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in the tropical Pacific Ocean, has a significant impact on hurricane activity in various regions of the world. El Niño changes ocean surface temperature patterns and atmospheric conditions, which in turn influences the formation of hurricanes.

In the Black Sea, hurricanes are becoming more destructive

At the end of November, a devastating hurricane hit Batumi and the entire Black Sea coast. The resorts of Adjara were heavily damaged by this hurricane. Climatologists warn that the severity of hurricanes in the Black Sea will increase as greenhouse gases increase in the Earth's atmosphere.

Russia, China and Iran are present in Irish waters and could pose a threat to the UK through the Irish “back door”, warns think tank Policy Exchange. The Policy Exchange report highlights the seriousness of the security threat and accuses Dublin of neglecting European defence.

According to a report by the think tank, the UK is facing “hidden” security threat due to the presence of Russian, Chinese and Iranian forces in Irish territorial waters. Analysts accuse Dublin of “frivolity” in matters of European defence.

Growing Russian threat in Irish territorial waters

According to the center Policy Exchange, The UK should strengthen its air and naval presence in Northern Ireland to deter the growing Russian threat in Irish territorial waters. The report is supported by two former UK defense secretaries, Michael Fallon and George Robertson.

Read also: US B-1B Lancer bombers begin strikes on Syria

Britain and Ireland face “acute maritime threat” due to the Russian strategy of attacking submarine cables and pipelines, as well as the presence of Russian warships.

The report also raised concerns about Russian intelligence operations in Ireland and vulnerability to cyber attacks, mentioning “excessively large” Russian diplomatic mission in Dublin.

Great activity of Russian intelligence services in Ireland

In 2022, the Russian Embassy in Dublin employed 30 staff - more than in many other European countries. This demonstrates the great activity of the Russian intelligence services in Ireland.

China poses another serious threat to UK security

China poses another serious threat to UK security due to its rapid technological advancement and global influence.

Read also: NATO is preparing for Russian missile attacks in Europe

MI5 Director General, Ken McCallum, noted that Iran is often linked to terrorism. Last year, UK authorities identified at least 10 potential threats involving the kidnapping or harm of people living in the UK whom the Iranian regime considers enemies.

Ireland needs to reconsider its military neutrality

Center report Policy Exchange stresses that Ireland needs investment from other NATO countries and Ireland needs to reconsider its military neutrality. Fallon and Lord Robertson welcome Ireland's review of its defense policy and call on the UK to help Ireland strengthen its defence.

Read also: Russia blocks GPS in Europe, preparing for war with NATO

Concerns have been raised about the possible impact of Sinn Féin's victory in the 2025 Irish elections. The party is on the rise in the Republic, but its position has weakened in opinion polls south of the border.

Greater defense cooperation between the UK and Ireland is needed

Overall, the report Policy Exchange calls for a stronger response to the threats posed by Russia, China and Iran through Ireland, as well as a review of neutrality and strengthened defense cooperation between the UK and Ireland.

Germany's dream of 15 million electric vehicles is fading as, without subsidies for electric vehicles, the country's demand is expected to fall by 14% this year. Even BMW and VW are scaling back their ambitions in the electric vehicle market.

Read also: How prices have changed in Georgia in 2023

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, who has long supported a flexible strategy to produce cars with different engine types, now sees his cautious strategy in a less favorable light. With EV adoption slowing and demand for plug-in hybrids reviving, his approach appears smarter, despite criticism for not doing enough to challenge the EV leaderTesla Inc.

Demand for electric vehicles in Germany in 2024 has become a concern

Demand for electric vehicles in Germany in 2024 has become a concern. The upper end of the electric vehicle market is saturated, while the lower end suffers from a lack of offers in the price category up to 25,000 euros, says Jan Burgard, head of the automotive consultancy Berills Strategy Advisors.

Read also: Tourists in Japan bring Instagrammers and trash

After several years of rapid growth in electric vehicle sales, it has become increasingly difficult to market electric vehicles. A lack of proper government incentives for EV manufacturers in Europe and reduced support in the US mean demand for EVs is declining. Despite the emergence of new models and leasing options, charging infrastructure and high prices remain barriers to widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

In Germany, demand for electric vehicles is expected to decline by 14%

Sales of electric vehicles are expected to fall by 14% in Germany due to the removal of government subsidies, the first decline since 2016, according to lobby group VDA. At the same time, the world is seeing a general decline in forecasts as electric vehicles remain less affordable compared to similar models with internal combustion engines, despite the price war started by Tesla.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing in his remarks drew attention to the importance of developing charging infrastructure to support the electric vehicle market in Germany, emphasizing the importance of this aspect for the future development of the industry.

Read also: Prices for utilities in Georgia in 2024

Berlin is lagging behind amid ambitious plans to develop charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Although Transport Minister Volker Wissing has announced plans to invest €6.3 billion in nationwide infrastructure by 2030, implementation of the plan has been slower than expected. By September last year there were only about 105,000 operational public charging stations in Germany, far from the stated target.

Germany will have to significantly increase the pace of installation of charging stations

Germany will have to significantly increase the pace of installation of charging stations

Germany will have to significantly increase the pace of installation of charging stations if it wants to reach its EV target by 2030, according to the VDA. However, the question remains as to who will pay for this infrastructure.

At the VDA event, politicians and auto industry representatives acknowledged that charging charges are key to stimulating interest in electric vehicles, but the question of who should bear the financial cost of expanding infrastructure remained unresolved. According to analysts Deutsche Bank, rising electricity prices have further reduced demand for electric vehicles.

Germany expects first drop in electric vehicle sales in eight years

Forecasts show Germany is set to see its first fall in electric vehicle sales in eight years, with deliveries of all-electric vehicles slumping by 14% in 2024. This threatens the government's ambitious goal of putting 15 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030.

Read also: Stagnation of the Batumi real estate market in autumn 2023

As of November, only 2% of all cars on German roads were fully electric. Automakers including Volkswagen Audi are responding to the slowdown in electric vehicle growth by cutting EV lineups and backtracking on some plans.

A long-term decline in electric vehicle sales could undermine investment in the industry.

A long-term decline in electric vehicle sales could undermine investment in the industry.

Difficulties in EV adoption could lead to a long-term decline in EV sales, undermining investment in the industry and creating challenges to complying with emissions regulations. At the same time, delaying the transition to electric vehicles encourages drivers to use their old cars longer, which does not improve the environmental situation.

BMW chief Oliver Zipse has raised concerns about the availability of charging infrastructure in a few years' time, highlighting the challenges facing the electric vehicle industry.

A year after travel restrictions were lifted, authorities are grappling with the influx of millions of visitors, especially tourists in Japan who do not respect the environment and local customs. Return of tourists to Japan brings Instagrammers and trash.

At the height of the Covid pandemic, restaurateurs and owners of Tokyo's Tsukiji Market were probably dreaming of days like this when tourists would return to Japan.

Tourists in Japan's Tsukiji city don't always behave well

Columns of tourists with smartphones wander the narrow streets, stopping to inspect hand-forged kitchen knives and tsukemono pickles and sip free samples of green tea. Restaurants tempt lunchtime tourists in Japan with grilled wagyu sticks, poached crab legs and, for dessert, plump strawberries in chewy mochi rice.

Tourists in Japan's Tsukiji city don't always behave well

However, there are signs that Japan's multinational tourists in the city of Tsukiji are not always well behaved. Signs in English urge them not to eat outside the storefronts or leave trash. Staff remind diners where to queue for the 2,700 yen (£14.40) 12-course sushi lunch. Here, as in many other popular destinations around the world, the boom in tourism is a double-edged sword.

Almost a year after tourism restrictions were lifted in Japan

Nearly a year after Japan's pandemic tourism restrictions were lifted, foreign visitors have returned with a vengeance, drawn by a weak yen, the world's best cuisine and the promise of a vacation of a lifetime in a country once considered a tourist backwater.

Read also: How prices have changed in Georgia in 2023

“Everything is cheap, the service is incredible, and the food is the best you'll get for a fraction of the price you'd pay in America”, said Tommy Buheit, an American visiting Japan for the first time.

These and other attractions attracted 25.8 million foreign visitors to Japan last year, six times more than in 2022, according to immigration authorities. Together they spent a record ¥5.3 trillion (£28.3 billion), according to the Japan Tourism Agency. Japan's government wants more, setting an ambitious target of 60 million visitors - and spending of 15 trillion yen - by the end of the decade.

But critics say infrastructure is ill-prepared to handle increased tourism in Japan, citing even greater pressure on housing, public transport and services as the country grapples with severe labor shortages and an aging population.

Tourism in Georgia can learn valuable lessons from Japan's experience

Tourism in Georgia can learn valuable lessons from Japan's experience

Tourism in Georgia can learn valuable lessons from the Japanese experience and apply them in the context of tourism development and visitor management.

First, Georgia should develop a sustainable tourism strategy that takes into account the interests of the local population, the preservation of cultural heritage and the environmental sustainability of tourist destinations. Just as Japan strives for a balance between welcoming tourists and preserving the quality of life of local residents, Georgia must create mechanisms to control and regulate tourist flows.

Secondly, Georgia should invest in the development of less popular tourist destinations to relieve congestion in centers and distribute flows throughout the country. Just as Japan allocated 11 “typical” destinations, Georgia can focus on the country's diverse regions, offering tourists unique and varied experiences.

Read also: 7 million tourists visited Georgia in 2023

Thirdly, it is important for Georgia to focus on educating tourists and the population about the importance of respecting local customs, culture and the environment. Just as Japan began charging fees to visit some cultural and natural attractions, Georgia could introduce measures to encourage responsible tourist behavior and help preserve the country's unique cultural and natural resources.

Tourists in Japan without negative impact on the quality of life of the local population

In my vision of a new “tourist nation” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said sustainable tourism depends on welcoming tourists to Japan without negatively impacting the quality of life of the local population. Proposals outlined by the government last year include increasing the number of buses and taxis, increasing public transport fares at peak times and opening new bus routes.

tourists in Japan highlight 11 “typical” destinations including rural eastern Hokkaido and the subtropical island of Okinawa. Local officials hope it will draw away visitors from Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, which together accounted for 64% of foreign overnight stays in the region in the first eight months of last year. The emphasis will be less on consumption and more on cultural immersion, from mountain asceticism and Zen meditation to pottery and sake making.

“Tourism pollution” most prominently in Japan in Kyoto

“Tourism pollution in Japan” most prominently in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, home to some of the country's most famous temples and shrines, and in the Gion geisha district. In 2022, the number of tourists visiting Kyoto exceeded 43 million - about 30 times the city's population.

Peter McIntosh, a longtime Canadian resident who runs geisha-themed walking tours, said residents were struggling to reconcile the chaos caused by crowds of visitors with soaring costs.

Problems and prospects of tourism in Japan – GeoInform.ge

Problems and prospects of tourism in Japan

“The problem is that people here want the best of both worlds - to have a quieter life and make money - but as more people arrive the situation will only get worse. Kyoto becomes open to everyone”, McIntosh shared, noting that tour groups of up to 40 people are not unusual.

The boom has seen lesser-known destinations struggle with travelers seeking to scrape together social media content. These include a railway crossing in Kamakura, southwest of Tokyo, which is swarming with fans Slam Dunk, a popular manga comic and anime series about high school basketball. The crossroads that appears in the opening credits of the anime is considered by fans to be “sacred place”.

Overtourism in Japan is damaging

Some local authorities are taking matters into their own hands, fearing that overtourism in Japan is damaging sites of historical and environmental importance.

Visitors to Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO world heritage site, must pay 100 yen (53 cents) for admission, and later this year tourists heading to the Taketomi Islands will be charged an as-yet-undetermined amount to help protect their pristine beaches.

Read also: Rental prices in Georgia fell by almost 30% 2024

From this summer, visitors planning to climb to the top of Mount Fuji, another UNESCO site, will be charged 2,000 yen (£10.70) as local authorities try to ease congestion on the crowded trails, which were walked by more than 5 million people in 2019 Human.

Japan has become a tourism destination

“Japan has become a tourism destination”, said Carlene de Bruin, who came to Tokyo from the Netherlands with her father and brother. “I can imagine that the locals are fed up with this and we are trying to mind our own business. But you can feel the vibe of social media...people dress and take pictures a certain way because it makes for good content”.

Kenichi Kondo, a Tsukiji fishmonger, beamed as he served grilled black cod fillets to hungry passers-by. “Our income has increased tenfold since tourists returned to Japan, compared to a couple of years ago.”, noted Kondo, whose business has occupied the same location for more than 50 years. “At first we had a lot of people from North America and Europe, but now they are mostly from Southeast Asia and we are expecting a lot of visitors from China when they celebrate their New Year soon”.

While he welcomed the support tourism has given his store's 10 employees, Kondo admitted that litter has become a big problem. “We try to get around this problem by asking people to take out their trash if they buy our fish. There are exceptions, but tourists here are generally well behaved”.

Japan isn't just for your Instagram story.

Lizzie Jones, an American on her fourth trip to Japan, was optimistic about the crowd she encountered in Tsukiji on an unseasonably warm February day. “You expect this when you do tourist things... when you come to this market you know it will be crowded”.

But like many locals, she objected to the scavengers and busybodies who flout local customs and treat busy areas like their own personal photo studio.

Read also: An unknown painting by Niko Pirosmani was found

“I think it's a generational issue.”, she shared. “The first few times I came here there was no trash, but now there is a lot of it. There is also a sense of entitlement...tourists in Japan do whatever they want and don't learn the local customs. They do not care. Japan isn't just for your Instagram story.”.
