An unknown painting by Niko Pirosmani was found

Specialists from the State Laboratory for Expertise of Works of Art of Georgia carefully studied the painting found in a private collection and confirmed that this work of art indeed belongs to the brush of the legendary Georgian artist. Thus, a previously unknown painting by Niko Pirosmani was found.

This painting depicts a deer, a motif often found in Georgian art. artist-primitivist Niko Pirosmani. The total number of known works by Pirosmani amounts to approximately 300 paintings, most of which are in the collections of the State Museum of Art and the National Art Gallery of Georgia.

An examination confirmed the authenticity of a previously unknown painting by Niko Pirosmani

The examination of the authenticity of the work was carried out by the State Laboratory for the Examination of Works of Art at the Museum of Art. Amiranashvili. The deer depicted in the painting was one of Pirosmani's favorite characters, and similar motifs can be found in several of his works.

After a successful examination of the original, the painting was returned to the owner, whose name was not disclosed, and the approximate cost of the work was not specified. The National Museum emphasized that most of Pirosmani’s works, which have survived to this day, are in the collections of Georgian museums, but a number of paintings are also kept in museums in Moscow.

A small number of works are also in private collections around the world, and, as an example, in 2018 one of the paintings was sold at auction Sotheby’s for 2,230’000 pounds.

He paid a record 629 thousand pounds for the painting by Niko Pirosmani, and the starting price “Roe deer by the stream” amounted to 150-200 thousand pounds sterling.
