Exclusive publication from GeoInform.ge – presentation books “Amnesia of Historical Memory. Adjara in 1918-1919”. This is a historical documentary essay by Rezo Romanadze.
From the author:
The writing of this narrative is justified by the need to study the political and economic state of Adjara in the period 1918-1919.
Based on the study of historical documents, we were given the task of highlighting the pathetic situation of Georgia at that time, and deducing a logical chain of what was happening in Adjara. Despite the 300-year stay of the region under Turkish domination, the population of Adjara for centuries cherished the dream of reunification with their homeland and living as part of a united Georgia, while preserving the traditions of life, culture and language.
Adjarians have always been law-abiding and loyal, but at the same time proud and militant patriots. Therefore, they were unfairly subjected to discrimination and discomfort.
This book actually attempts to make a statement of historical documents and archival materials, as well as minor commentary on the topic.
A book “Amnesia of Historical Memory. Adjara in 1918-1919” consists of 4 chapters:
- About plans to restore the British protectorate on the territory of Georgia.
- Adjara in 1918-1919.
- Amnesia of Historical Memory.
- Georgia and Georgians in archival materials of the Ottoman Empire.
From the contents of the book, it becomes obvious that the strengthening of German influence at that time, then the well-known plans to establish a British protectorate in Georgia, and in March-April 1918, the Turkish occupation of the city of Batumi, and then on June 4 of the same year, the signing of the so-called “Peace Treaty” with Georgia, accelerated the process of establishing Soviet power in the territory of the Republic of Adjara.
In our opinion, the events of 1918-1919 were fateful not only for the population of Adjara, but also for the whole of Georgia.
The reader may notice that the fundamental and core documents in the general scheme of the book are two documents – This is a publication in the Ertoba newspaper on June 6, 1918, entitled “War or Treaty,” which condemned the proposal of one of the members of the Constituent Assembly of Georgia to change the political vector of development of the state by focusing on Turkey. And an excerpt from the report of the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly of Georgia P. Geleishvili dated August 10, 1920 regarding giving the city of Batumi and the region the status of broad autonomy.
The reader will be interested in reading the comments of politicians and the media on this topic of the events of 1918 in Adjara and Georgia in general.
We think that the reader will be interested in some documents from the archival materials of the Ottoman Empire regarding Georgia and Georgians.
In conclusion, we propose the conclusion that Amnesia of historical memory and ignoring past mistakes are unacceptable and extremely dangerous. Unfortunately, the error limit has already been reached!
The reader will be interested in familiarizing himself with the various documents and publications from the 100-year-old trial, as well as the treaties and agreements concluded during that time period.
We are confident that the attentive reader will discover many new and interesting things, and will also find echoes of those events in our time.
The book will be presented in Georgian and Russian. We are also preparing an English edition.
